Weekly classes

Beginner’s class  -   $7    (one hour)

Saturday night class  -  $10   (two hours)

Both classes are open to all ages: children and adults. Typically, classes are attended by adults.

You are welcome to come as often as you like. You do not need to prepay or sign up for a series.

Simply send an email (or phone call) to preregister on the weeks you'd like to come.

You may borrow a drum during class (or bring an instrument of your own).

If you are a beginner, we strongly recommend that you attend at least one beginner’s class before you attend a Saturday night class. If the Beginner’s class does not fit into your schedule, another option is to set up a 1:1 lesson with Rose at a time that is convenient for you. There is more info on the “Lessons” page of this website.

When is the beginner’s class?
I am in the process of asking people which day and time would be best. Currently, we have three people signed up and have agreed to Tuesdays, 7-8pm, starting August 10th. If more people sign up and a different day is okay for everyone, this plan may change.

What is the difference between the two classes? In the Beginner’s class we will learn how to play the djembe and how to read music using the "Gun godo pata" method of notation. The Saturday night class learns at a faster pace, the rhythms are more complex, and singing is encouraged. Below is more about the Saturday night class.

The intention of the Saturday night class is to experience an uplifting feeling of connection and unity.

The songs we learn provide a foundation so that we can create new music together during the music meditation.

Each song has a singing part and drumming parts. Expressive Drumming and Chanting (EDAC) practice sheets are provided for each song. So far, Rose has taught 60 songs.

Occassionally, the group participates in guided improvisation activities. People learn how to play supportive rhythms, while each person has the opportunity to make up an improvised melody. Supportive Rhythms practice sheets can be provided, with suggestions for bell, woodblock, djun djun, and djembe parts that fit together in a harmonious way.

The last 20-30 minutes of each class is devoted to the candlelit music meditation. We invite you to play from your heart. Together we create one spontaneous song. You will hear people vocal toning and playing a variety of instruments. Spontaneous moments inspire us to feel more alive!
