weekly class

Expressive Drumming and Chanting class

Each week, we provide instruction for two or three songs. So far, the class has learned 28 songs. This includes traditional and contemporary songs from many cultures: Hindu, African, Sufi, Buddhist and Native American. For each song, there are two or three suggested rhythms. People can choose which rhythm they want to do. Each song includes a basic rhythm and others that are more challanging. This makes the class fun for everyone, whether you are new to drumming or have been drumming for awhile.

Expressive Drumming practice sheets are provided for each song. People have found these to be extrememly helpful during class and also for practicing at home. These practice sheets are created by Rose and are not available anywhere else. An internet search on "drumming and chanting" will show you that there are resources for chanting, but, drumming rhythms are not included. And there are instructional resources for drumming rhythms, but, singing is not included. Expressive Drumming practice sheets include both. Plus, they are carefully designed so that you can see how each rhythm lines up with another and how it lines up with the singing part. We will teach you how to read and speak the drumming language that we use, called the Gun go do pa ta method, developed by Babatunde Olatunji. If you are new to the group, we encourage you to arrive fifteen minutes early to become familiar with this.

The last 30 minutes of each class is devoted to the meditation. The lights are dimmed and the candles are lit. Together we create one spontaneous song. There is more information about our class on the meditation, chanting, and vocal toning pages of this website.

The intention of the weekly class is to experience an uplifting feeling of connection and unity. We create an environment where everyone feels respected, supported, and inspired, so that we can learn and explore new ways of expressing ourselves through music. Improvisation is integrated and woven throughout the structure of the class. The songs that we practice provide a foundation and a starting point so that we can create new music together. Spontaneous moments inspire us to feel more alive! We invite you to  play from from the heart and do what feels right without thinking about whether you are doing it right. We develop the ability to trust our intuition. We express our authentic selves.

Rate: $10. African drums are provided.

Schedule - 7pm-8:30pm, every Saturday, except Third Saturdays. We also meet Third Fridays. New people are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes early for an introduction to drumming. After class, people are welcome to stay and enjoy refreshments.
