Expressive Drumming is not just about drumming. Instead, people may choose to sing, dance, play the shakers, or just listen. We offer chants from various cultures: Hindu, Sufi, African, Buddhist and Native American. We sing them in a repeating pattern, which allows the mind and body to relax. Some of the chants are call and response. With this style, participants may volunteer to take a turn leading, while the rest of the group echoes them. The contrast between one single voice, followed by a group of voices, is very beautiful. Some of the chants that we do are upbeat and lively, while others are more relaxing and meditative.

We start with the chanting and then add the drumming. We suggest hand drumming rhythms that compliment each chant. Each song has two or three rhythms that are played at the same time. With a little practice, you will be able to do your rhythm without the other rhythms distracting you. The English translations are explained, since most of the songs are in other languages. If the suggested words or rhythms are too challanging (or too easy) you are welcome to improvise. This adds depth to the song and makes it come alive!
